Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would step back from public roles after House committee released his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their development".

Summers, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it respected his choice to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This development comes after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on recently to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will then proceed to the office of the White House for approval. The President has stated he intends to approve the bill, after changing his stance on the matter following pressure from his supporters.

Message Details

A batch of financier-linked emails made public by the legislative panel recently referenced multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

The emails showed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often seeking to connect the official to notable global figures.

Individual Statement

After the emails were released with the wider community, Summers said he took "complete accountability for my poor choice to persist in communicating with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to restore trust and fix connections with the persons most important to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was not affiliated with the organization.

Summers became part of the board of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
