At least 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The informal settlements near Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major criminal organizations.

State officials stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
